I think that if you learn to feel depth yourself, you'll become a better squatter.

I've done 18 comp squats, 16 passed, 1 failed to get up, and 1 called on depth in my 2nd comp. Nobody's ever called depth for me.

Steve Giffen must have been talking to himself during these then.

Although with your squat style of close stance drop down, there's really no time for a depth call
A wider stance slower squatter will have more benefit from someone calling depth

The up call for Simon was not a depth call as much as a scream of encouragement to drive it up. The calls on the video are actually just after he began the drive rather than just before. I'll change the call from 'up' to 'push' to avoid confusion in future, but feel free to take the piss out of Simon for anything he may post in the future! lol :D

We rarely call depth for our lifters unless as stated they are a slow descent squatter that is struggling with really tight suits. I would much rather see a lifter know when they are at depth than have to be told however there are exceptions to this guideline on rare occasions. I hate seeing a coach call depth for a lifter who then gets failed for not making depth anyway.

When I started lifting in the 80's a lot of lifters would know when they had gone deep enough because the floor would hit them in the arse! lol

i think what simon is getting at is the

down..down...down down...UP! calls

these i found are reserved for extra wide squatters

simon is a narrow squatter and fast, it doesn't really apply to him

doesn't even have to be extra wide

my theory:
Fast and close stance - generally depth calls not much use
Slow and close, medium or wide stance - depth calls can be of great benefit to the lifter

Also from a refereeing perpective: Lean lifters like simon are much easier to tell depth for than bigger lifters

As much as I'd like to be able to squat as fast as Andrew Logan I haven't figured out the correct technique yet,
so will be continuing to ask for depth calls at big comps. However I have ordered 2 of the same suits as Andrew
so maybe I'll perfect the dive bomb this year :P

I still remember when I was spotting last year at Nationals, I was forewarned by an official that Logan was known to be a very fast squatter so to be ready for this when spotting haha.
I should probably be stretching instead of talking on this forum.

Dropping so fast, but still having the tightness to reverse it and squat it up as fast as Andrew does is a great feat, most people, like me would just die in the arse if we tried to drop that fast!
