Deadlifts

Postby Tim on Mon Mar 08, 2010 6:19 pm

Hi guys

I was hoping to get a little feedback on my deadlift form - I know these aren't the greatest videos.

the third (240kg) is an equal 1RM. I know I stumbled in the first lift, but I was wearing boots with a slight heel, whereas I normally deadlift in Volleys.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tim

Timboy! Good to see you posting again mate, what happened to the log? You always were a busy fella...

I can't say much about the deadlifts other than you look like you had more than 240kg in the tank!
I should probably be stretching instead of talking on this forum.

Hey Tom

I stopped my log here as I realised that I had more desire to compete in Strongman than Powerlifting. I felt bad as this forum is very specifically powerlifting - I felt like I was wasting peoples time.

I still lurk regularly, and decided to post this here because nobody in the country knows more about deadlifting than you guys!

IRT my deadlifts - a lot of people said it looks like I did 240kg easy - and to me looking at the video it seems that way to. To be honest though, its pretty much my max and it hurt on the day! I feel I am a lot stronger than a 240kg deadlift indicates, so I am actually hoping that someone can point out a glaring deficiency in technique which I can fix....

Tim, nothing obviously wrong in that deadlift, possibly you could drive your hips through faster when the bar
gets above your knees to make the lockout easier.
BigPete willl be able to offer the best critique

Looked like a fun comp, how many competitors were there?

10 u/105s and 6 heavies. A few big boys - at 140ish kg I was around the middle of the pack size wise.

Darling Downs Strongest Man was a great comp for both athletes and spectators despite the adverse weather, Joel did a great job of organising it.

Tim,
Thought I would let the others have a crack before I chimed in.
I wasn't aware it was a strongman comp so that settled a few questions for me.
Given that it was you must ask yourself how much are you willing to do to succeed in strongman.
Your basic technique is sound but you have no powder on your legs and have boots on, let alone the fact that you are lifting raw. My question therefore is how well prepared were you going into the comp and are you willing to do more next time.
Using straps for singles is foreign to most of us in the IPF but is the norm for strongman. Most strongman however do have deadlift and squat suits, use chalk if needed, powder, sometimes wear slippers or socks etc.
What I'm talking about is maximising your chance at lifting your max weight.
With a tighter set up, better head position, powder on your legs, a decent suit and slippers you might have pulled 280kg!
Training in a suit and using slightly better form with the above extras would get you up towards the 300kg mark.
Again my question to you is are you willing to go the extra mile to succeed. You obviously have the potential.
:congrats:

Pete, Paul and Tom, thanks for replying, I appreciate the feedback.

Pete it was a mystery event so nobody prepared going into it, having said that it would have been easy to throw some more appropriate shoes in the car just in case. I am not sure if suits would have been allowed, but of course I didn't ask so they may well have been.

You commented on my head position and that I need to have a tighter setup, can you be a little more specific? I appreciate you taking the time.

Thanks

Tim,
Again your deadlift is very sound technically but to pull the really big weights you need to pack tighter in your set up position.
Because you were using straps you spent a long time geing those on but next to no time getting fully set and tight.
To do this you must slow your breathing down prior to approaching the bar. A mistake many lifters make is waiting until they get to the bar to begin focusing. All your pre psych up should be done before you get to the bar, preferably directly behind the bar off the platform. From the time you approach you should be on remote control. Whether for a set of ten or a max single your approach should always be the same. Squats and benches are likewise.
If using straps get them on nice and tight while maintaining your slow and deep breathing. Pull your feet into position, shins on the bar, pull your chest up high and focus your eyes up and locked into one spot and one spot only. From here your eyes should never move. This can help limit your butt coming up too fast etc.
With your chest up you can now get really tight in your middle/upper back and take the slack out of the bar. In this position you should be super tight all over, almost in a position to squat out of the hole.
This position will give you maximum leg drive and the bar should come off the floor cleanly.
All the best going forward.
